Tonight my daughter Rachel took me to see Happy Feet. After getting over the initial shock of my daughter offering to pay, we hit the 5:20 showing at the Encore Theatre.
First let me get this off my chest. Is it really necessary to have 10 minutes of commercials at a movie?! As if you don't get enough at home watching tv. The previews were good. We were both excited to see the previews for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (July '07). We also laughed really hard when they showed a preview for a movie about Santa Claus (played by Paul Giamatti) and his brother Fred (Vince Vaughn). The preview was kind of funny, but what made us laugh the most was when they displayed that it would be coming 'Christmas of 2007.' Huh? Nothing like a verrrrrrrry early preview! Sheesh!
But I digress, Happy Feet was a surprisingly good movie. A great story of difference resulting in alienation. Mumbles (Elijah Wood) cannot find his heart song, and instead discovers his talent for dancing. Therefore he is ostracized (or should I say Penguinized), and ultimately cast out. His dancing is simply, "not very penguin." During his time on his own - he facing challenges, meets new friends and discovers the reason the penguins cannot find any fish. He sets out to find the aliens, to get them to bring about a solution. There is plenty of good comedy (for kids and adults alike) and the music is also very good. The movie poster warns that the movie may cause toe-tapping. I did indeed find myself tapping my feet many times. The dancing was provided via computer generation by tap dancing superstar Savian Glover. I give Happy Feet a great big endorsement. Grab the spouse and kids and go have a great time.
