Monday evening I sat in my living room watching video of Col. Nick Polizzotto's funeral. The staggering number of police from so many different agencies. The firefighters who also turned out for the solemn occasion. The seemingly endless line of cars in the procession to the cemetery and the incredible aerial shot of a sea of flashing red & blue lights. I watched as they showed snippets of the funeral mass and listened in quiet remembrance as Nick received his final "10-42" call from police dispatch.
But, after that, something else caught my attention. The video crew was doing interviews with some of the citizens who came and stood along the procession path. One young said something that sounded so simple, yet so profound. When asked why she had come out, she said, "she understood that Nick gave his best an an officer. To Serve and Protect our community. Now, this was her opportunity to return the favor by showing up to Serve and Respect." I was blown away by that statement! In a world where so many people fell like they are 'entitled' to being served & protected, this woman was keeping the focus where Jesus would have placed it. On someone else other than herself. Someone who really did deserve it. Hopefully, other people heard this statement with not just their ears, but with their hearts as well.
